Dr. Dog w/Cotton Jones & RIcHIE

Presented by Lightning 100.1

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

If you were to strand Philly’s DIY neo-psychers Dr. Dog on a desert island with no instruments and no equipment, six months later they’d likely have assembled a modest recording studio out of coconuts and palm fronds. The studio-rat indie rockers — who have visited Nashville roughly twice a year, every year, for half a decade — simply cannot stop turning out consistently good records. February’s Be the Void features a bunch of AM-pop-inspired, Nilsson-meets-The-Band indie gems, with the sort of subtle studio tricks that only a close-knit crew of gear nerds would come up with. Their follow-up EP, last month’s Wild Race, is a compact, viscera-shredding little cannonball of heartfelt rock ’n’ roll, filled with familiar progressions and enchanting melodies you’ll swear you’ve heard before on a Kinks, Burrito Brothers or Guided by Voices record. You should probably catch this show — in fact, you should probably catch Dr. Dog live any time you get the chance. But fear not: They’ll probably be back in six months. And we’ll probably write them up then, too.
