Other Lives w/Indians

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Look, at the moment there’s no shortage of beard-draped bands from college towns, so I hope you’ll allow me the skepticism I harbored when I first laid eyes on Other Lives and thought, “Can we bring back chillwave?” Between Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Grizzly Bear, I mumbled, we should have the Neil Young-cum-minimalist composer thing covered, right? Turns out I was wrong — we did, in fact, need one more of these bands. (“What do you mean these bands,” groans someone young at a local institution of higher learning.) The dusty well that hadn’t been tapped by the neu-folk elite was cinematic in nature, and who better to dig for gold than a band of friends from Stillwater, Okla.? And the troupe found it, especially on Tamer Animals and the soon-released Mind the Gap EP, where weathered, evocative roots tunes meet sweeping string arrangements and intricate rhythmic cadences under a canopy of lush vocal melodies. Radiohead certainly took note, offering Other Lives an enviable opening slot on one of its few tours in support of King of Limbs, and the rest of us should rightly turn our heads too. Recent 4AD signee Indians opens.
