Trampled by Turtles w/HoneyHoney & The Kingston Springs

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The fact that Dylan, the Avetts and Mumford all released their new albums within a couple weeks of each other reminded me of last year’s Grammys, when producers engineered an onstage passing-of-the-torch moment between the grizzled archetype and the two young string bands. Music critic Steven Hyden, for one, concluded the bands’ earnestness has little in common with Dylan’s cryptic irreverence — not that they’re trying to do the same thing the slippery old dude does. The Avetts’ and Mumfords’ arena-galvanizing approaches leave room for other young, folk-rocking string bands to come at things from a different angle, and Trampled By Turtles does precisely that. The band hails from Dylan’s native Minnesota, but it wears that biographical commonality lightly. Stars and Satellites — Trampled’s sixth album — captures lyric-centric folk ballads and blistering speed ’grass with greater crispness than any previous album, and landed the guys on Letterman for the first time. Live, they muscle through the material with blue-collar bar-band directness. 5 p.m. at Public Square Park
