Black Moth Super Rainbow w/The Casket Girls

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

He may loathe the fact that his music gets associated with psychedelia, but Black Moth Super Rainbow leader Tobacco’s braided analog synth arrangements induce a pleasant kind of vertigo nevertheless. Predominantly a solo vehicle on record, the touring version of Black Moth Super Rainbow reproduces Tobacco’s warped, vocoder-drenched vision with uncanny accuracy. At the same time, the band’s formidable group chemistry and individual musicianship distinguish the show as its own entity. Where Tobacco relies mostly on drum machines, for example, live drummer Iffernaut nails the feel of the original beats while adding an unmistakable spark of her own. For years, Tobacco sat off to the side looking glum as he hunched over his vocoder rig. His engagement with the crowd hasn’t changed much (he and lead keyboardist Seven Fields of Aphelion both stand these days), but the band’s insular, cult-like aura somehow adds to the charge of the performances.
