The Nobility w/The Non-Commissioned Officers & The Kernal and His New Strangers
This bill features a trio of acts from the Midstate that have each absorbed a variety of styles labeled “pop” and synthesized them into their own respective brands. Headliners The Nobility revel in the pop of the 1960s as it came of age, without getting bogged down with nostalgia for it — they bring to mind the forward looks of the ex-Beatles’ solo work and Schmilsson-era Nilsson. The Non-Commissioned Officers stir electronic elements into the mix — reminiscent of New Wavers like The Cars — but they deliver far more introspective lyrics than those precipitated by the disco scene. Hailing from Jackson, which is partway between Memphis and Nashville, The Kernal and His New Strangers have cleverly adopted elements of the soul and country that made each city famous. The band favors nuanced arrangements with lush instrumentation and harmonies, but the focus is clearly on the memorable melodies and sing-along choruses that made you want to listen in the first place.
