The Sword w/Eagle Claw & Gypsyhawk
While this has been a wonderful year for us — great family and friends, rewarding work experiences, the cat no longer pooping in the bathtub — the only thing we’re really, really thankful for is that trad-metal titans The Sword are going to save us from having to spend another boring night at the in-laws’. Also, our presumptive hangover pretty much negates all of that Black Friday nonsense, so it’s a double win. The Sword’s latest album, Apocryphon, finds the band abandoning the concept record approach of Warp Riders for a sci-fi anthology approach that, lyrically speaking, lands somewhere between Asimov’s Robot stories and Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Musically, it’s rich with the monster riffs and pummeling beats we’ve come to expect — imagine Mountain’s Nantucket Sleighride crashing Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” — only tighter and more exacting in its bludgeoning. It’s definitely something to be thankful for.
