Guy Clark w/The Honeycutters

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Guy Clark may be a cult hero of folk-country songcraft and storytelling Texas balladry, but he does have quite the cult. This One’s For Him: A Tribute to Guy Clark — which took home Album of the Year at the Americana awards — collected performances by peers who are no slouches in the esteem department themselves (Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson), those who’ve exposed his songs to broader audiences (Vince Gill), co-writer friends (Shawn Camp and Verlon Thompson) and numerous admirers who found their footing in the wake of his writerly crowd. It’s no coincidence that Clark’s close, confiding performance of a song he wrote for his late wife, Susanna — “My Favorite Picture of You” — was the moment that seemed to move the AMA awards show audience the most. And it’s evident that his influence lives on with pensive young disciples like Robert Ellis and Andrew Combs — even if the primary path of the moment for twentysomethings with acoustic guitars leads toward Mumford-ian anthems.
