In our cover story on the With Your Friends Festival, our esteemed music editor D. Patrick Rodgers highlighted the inclusive nature of electronic dance music. Here, that theme leaks over into band-oriented styles, as three very different groups smudge the timestamps on sounds born in the ’80s by using them to address the everlasting tug-of-war between wants and needs. Dream-pop quartet Ponychase not only features Forget Cassettes’ E. G. Cameron, but also shines a well-deserved spotlight on Jordan Caress, one of our town’s best and most prolific collaborators (and an occasional Scene contributor), as they build wistful melodies into airy, dramatic hooks focusing on love and loss. Tonight they celebrate their debut EP with help from Wild Cub’s lush, athletic grooves and Hanzelle’s space-kissed cyber dance party.
