Foreign Fields w/Whitehorse & Luella and the Sun
If you were disheartened by what sounded like a recent retirement announcement from Justin Vernon, there’s still a way to get your electro-acoustic fix locally, and it’s called Foreign Fields. These Wisconsin transplants don’t wade into waters as acutely confessional as what you’re used to hearing from Bon Iver, but they do draw from the same aesthetic well: pastoral sensibilities cradled by a shimmering bed of crystalline guitars and electronic effects. Despite being the fruit of a romantic-artistic partnership — between married Canadian singer-songwriters Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet — Whitehorse is made of considerably less delicate stuff than their showmates. The duo’s new album, The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss, is wiry, clever, thoroughly tuneful twang-pop. As singers, Doucet and McClelland circle each other playfully, sometimes harmonizing like a traditional duet and other times mirroring each other’s voices in octave unison or going it alone for a verse or two. This show will give you the best of both ambient and down-to-earth worlds.
