R. Stevie Moore w/David Cloud and the Gospel of Power

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Listening to every song in local lo-fi legend R. Stevie Moore’s expansive catalog would honestly be a full-time job. Seriously, if you had a Monday-to-Friday 9-to-5 wherein you simply listened to all of RSM’s material, top to bottom, you might never catch up with him. A quick perusal of Moore’s Bandcamp page alone reveals over 200 singles, albums, EPs and collections, among them a recent tribute to Russian political prisoners Pussy Riot as well as a collaboration with fellow psychedelic pop weirdo Ariel Pink titled Ku Klux Glam. And yes, some of RSM’s tracks are field recordings, or random plinkings on an instrument, or poetry, or — as in the case of “The Excess Gravity Problem” — Moore asking questions like, “Hey bro, why cainchu hold onto nuffin’ … why you keep droppin’ shi?” But for every few weird sonic explorations, there’s an absolutely exceptional slice of progressive pop music, like “Play Myself Some Music” or, fittingly, “Pop Music.” Also on tonight’s bill will be fellow silver-maned Nashville rock originator Dave Cloud and his Gospel of Power. Between Moore’s bedroom pop and Cloud’s psychedelic rock ’n’ roll, these two have been contributing to the “Nashville: More Than Just Country” game since before the PUJOLs, JEFFs, Darlins and Features of the world were even born. Action! will also perform. 9 p.m. at Springwater
