**Sold Out** Darrell Scott

Singer-Songwriter
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Darrell Scott has a sly way with the country-folk-pop readymade on this year’s full-length Long Ride Home — Scott’s brand of Americana mostly avoids artiness and sentimentality, and his genre exercises usually go somewhere.A well-respected session player and tunesmith, Scott turns Long Ride Home into a countrypolitan-tinged collection of songs that examine the limits of what you could call the male prerogative as it’s practiced in traditional country music:Hopkinsville” finds its hard-laboring, steel-toe-boot-wearing protagonist working his way to that Kentucky metropolis and his true love, while “Dance in the Darkness” is a piece of Nashville art that features a narrator who’s spying on an old flame.Scott’s expertly stitched pastiches have heart and soul — “The Country Boy” succinctly explains why country boys have to sing the blues. Both arty and crafty, Long Ride is eclectic Americana at its most compelling.
