Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Produced by T-Bone Burnett, Lisa Marie Presley’s new full-length, Storm & Grace, was written in England with a group of songwriters that included former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley. Storm & Grace features such troubled, ominous songs as “Un-Break,” which finds Elvis’ daughter singing confessional lyrics over insinuating tracks that stop and start in accordance with the song’s twists and turns. “How Do You Fly This Plane” and “Soften the Blows” resemble the artier side of alt-country, with understated acoustic guitars and electric piano predominating. It’s a spooky, plainspoken collection that brings to mind some of Shelby Lynne’s more hushed recordings.“So Long” features lyrics about the corrupting influence of “fair-weather friends,” and the overall tone of Storm & Grace is both contrite and forthright — Presley sings well, while Burnett’s production never overpowers the proceedings. It’s an honest, uncluttered record, with plenty of angst to spare.
