Buddy Guy w/Jonny Lang

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

At age 76, Louisiana-born and Chicago-burnished Buddy Guy is still a 10th-degree black belt of the blues whose searing guitar tone karate-chops a path through the music’s history all the way back to his mentor Muddy Waters and his initial inspiration Guitar Slim. As a singer, his red-clay approach, cured in the kilns of gospel and classic soul, can be sweetly transcendent. Guy’s rolling extra-high these days, delivering strong performances and relishing his December Kennedy Center Honors Award and a Grammy for his latest album, Living Proof. Former child prodigy Jonny Lang is his acolyte — at 32, he’s still a young gun whose radical vibrato and Stratocaster grind owe more than a little to his Nashville headliner. Both have shared the stage before on the annual Experience Hendrix tribute tour and Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival, but their current trek through the South and Midwest is the kind of torch-passing experience most blues fan relish.
