Dent May w/D. Watusi & William Tyler

Sell Out Presents

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Pop musicians search for ultimate truths in different ways, and the Mississippi singer-songwriter Dent May finds answers in the way loping bass patterns, insanely multiplied backing vocals and incongruous synthesizer lines intertwine above synthetic percussion.May made a splash with his 2009 debut, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulelehis combination of Beach Boys melodies and carefully calibrated lyrics garnered him comparisons with Elvis Costello and the Swedish pop musician Jens Lekman. May’s latest full-length, Do Things, features chromatic, yearning melodies that definitely suggest the influence of Brian Wilson.I hear Wilson, but May creates music that suggests Roxy Music hanging out in a suburban rec room with a stack of old 45s by The Tokens and Abba, and too much time on their hands.Do Things is sincere, woozy and charming — May finds beauty in banality, and that makes for exemplary pop.
