MV and EE w/Wooden Wand & Promised Land Sound

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

William Tyler has contributed to a mountain of records, and he’s a talented composer and performer in his own right. Sharing ownership of The Stone Fox with his sister Elise, he can now add entrepreneur to his accomplishments. Beyond running a solid kitchen and taproom, the pair put their combined decades of connections to good use in booking their cozy new club on the West Side. Vermont natives MV & EE (aka Matt Valentine and Erica Elder) pull from ’60s psych and folk to make fluid music with ample space for improvisation, but bring a focus lacking in many similar groups. Just when it feels like the melodies weaving around their drones and rhythm section will disintegrate, they crystallize into a post-grunge form that recalls Built to Spill with hints of The Flaming Lips. Joining them is Wooden Wand (aka James Toth, who we’ll call a local in spite of his move from Murfreesboro to Kentucky), whose haunting and incisive narratives lean toward Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt, but frequently have an otherworldly glow around the edges. Rounding out the bill are Promised Land, featuring Joseph and Evan Scala, playing hooky from their regular gig in Denney and the Jets to serve up their own Stones/Velvets gumbo.
