Honey Locust w/Jasmin Kaset & MeadownoisePop/Rock
Today’s music market is flooded with creative electronic musicians, but that doesn’t mean that creativity is limited to those who primarily compose with computers and keyboards. An alum of the Chicago improvisational scene, multi-instrumentalist Matt Glassmeyer plays winds with Lambchop when he’s not working on Meadownoise. At the center of his new record It’s 4:00 is “Get Back at My Girlfriend,” in which a stream-of-consciousness narrative runs along a humming soundscape, punctuated by a huge pop hook that strikes when you aren’t looking. This bubbling up from places you might not expect sets the tone for the rest of the evening: Next is Jasmin Kaset, who sets aside her Birdcloud persona as a gas-huffing aunt to serve up sharp and introspective pop. She gets help from a crack lineup that rotates from show to show, often featuring Aaron Irons and Joey Andrews from Non-Commissioned Officers as well as Poly’s Larissa Maestro and The Greater Good’s Adam White. Topping off the bill is Honey Locust, who mix in the liveliest of acoustic folk traditions, with clear and mellow vocals and experimental twists and turns of the variety native to Zach Condon and Andrew Bird.
