This band includes Melissa Mathes (vocals), (Joe McMahan (guitar), Jon Radford (drums), and Adam Bednarik (bass)....although Adam Binder occasionally subs in on bass.

All these fine folks have been doing exceptional musical things in town for some time now but this seems to be a magical combination. Melissa's vocals are hypnotic and jazz-inflected, with Joe's spectral blues guitar and the groove-obsessed rhythm section of Jon and Adam... It all adds up to a shockingly refreshing take on a classic rootsy sound. They've recorded a debut 10" EP and we'll be celebrating the release of that with an intimate in-store performance. It's a must.

The Vespers

The Vespers are one of those lucky young bands that have built an extensive underground following simply through word of mouth and heavy touring. The band is uniquely made up of two sibling duos; the Cryar sisters, and the Jones brothers. The four have distinguished their sound with an arsenal of acoustic instruments and harmonies only siblings can create. Their showmanship generates a roller coaster of sight, sound, and emotion and their inherent chemistry and instrumental versatility continues to set them apart.

The band has independently released two full-length records and left a reputable impression on both Americana and Christian audiences. They have toured over 30 states in their short 3 years, playing all different environments from colleges and festivals to listening rooms and theaters. The Vespers will make their first venture to the west coast this fall.

Some artists make a choice to pursue music, and some are just born into it. As the daughter of a music minister, talented singer-songwriter Shelly Colvin absolutely falls into the latter category.

Learning to sing harmonies and performing onstage with her parents before she even started kindergarten, music was a constant, integral element of her early life. This foundational framework translates to an impressive musical finesse that can be easily felt on her upcoming debut album Up the Hickory Down the Pine.

Mixing a relaxed, seventies country rock vibe with sweeping, breathy vocals that fall somewhere between Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star), Colvin creates an inviting sound that is both reminding and refreshing. Not content to use her early influences as simply a destination point, she showcases her creative momentum with the melodic shuffle of “Holding Steady,” the quiet heartbreak of “The Staying Kind” and the banjo-fueled pulse of “Pocket Change.”
