Mark Fosson w/Daniel Bachman & Lylas

Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Innovative guitarists continue to peer into the deep well of the meditative music that players such as John Fahey helped create in the 1960s.From Virginia, Daniel Bachman specializes in steel-string guitar and composes music that goes from slow, quiet drones to expressionist explosions. On last year’s Grey-Black-Green, Bachman recorded straight into a boombox, and the resulting collection is sometimes a bit harsh aurally, but always emotionally involving. This year’s Seven Pines refines his sound, with the drones integrated into tracks that sport melodies he seems to have dredged out of the North American collective unconscious.Meanwhile, guitarist Mark Fosson is a Fahey-influenced player who takes a more conventional approach.Cut at his Kentucky home, his new full-length Digging in the Dust: Home Recordings 1976 are demos Fosson made to prepare for the recordings that were released in 2006 as The Lost Takoma Sessions.
