Richard Buckner w/Chelsea Crowell

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The “more than just country” tag on Nashville is past being a little worn, but it’s nonetheless true. I shouldn’t hold my breath for any of our fine local hip-hop, electro-pop, or garage-y rock acts to show up on the TV show Nashville, but Chelsea Crowell just might fit that particular niche, and be able to shine a light on some of our diverse offerings. She’s an heiress to music industry royalty (granddaughter of Johnny Cash and June Carter, daughter of Roseanne Cash and Rodney Crowell), but that’s neither sheltered her from the things that good songs are written about, nor forced her into a mold. She’s shown continual interest in developing a style far different from Music City’s pop country, most recently adding Terry Kane and Jonathan Phillips from punk group Faux Ferocious to her ensemble. Tonight, she joins spellbinding rock and country veteran Richard Buckner, with whom she shares weighty song material as well as a resistance to being pigeonholed.
