Yonder Mountain String Band w/Wood and Wire

Presented by Sherpa/SPC

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

What do you call a group with a lineup of banjo, mandolin, flat-top guitar and upright bass that scatters songs by Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs, the Osborne Brothers, Reno & Smiley and more in every set? Yonder brings a hefty dose of extended Dionysian revelry to a largely succinct and Apollonian genre, but if your answer is anything other than “a bluegrass band,” you’ve got some explaining to do, especially once you’ve heard mandolin man Jeff Austin advising an audience to go out and listen to ’grass masters from Monroe to McCoury. Like ’em or not (and there are many more who do the former), the durable Colorado quartet are doing more than their share of work to ensure a future for bluegrass, a point that’s underlined by the presence of Del McCoury Band fiddler Jason Carter — who’s absolutely on fire these days — for a weeks-long stretch of shows, including this one.
