Shovels and Rope w/Andrew Combs

Pop/Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Even though Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent had honed their talents as solo acts and in bands before they joined forces, the response to their pairing has been phenomenal. Getting in front of audiences as tour support for Justin Townes Earle, Hayes Carll and the Felice Brothers ignited a word-of-mouth wildfire over their dynamic stage act, which usually features Hearst on guitar and Trent on drums, though the pair often trade off or incorporate other instruments. Though the husband-and-wife duo synchronize in a way unique to those who are intimately familiar with one another, they know which edges to leave a little rough in order to make a song rock. They stomp, shout and wail just as well as they love you tender, playing Poison Ivy and Lux Interior as much as June and Johnny on their sophomore effort, O’ Be Joyful — rockers like “Hail, Hail” sit comfortably alongside bittersweet ballads like “Lay Low.”
