More than 20 years after arriving in Nashville with a soon-to-be-disbanded bluegrass quartet, Mike Bub has managed that rarest of feats: becoming a celebrated musician — and personality — while standing behind the ultimate out-of-the-spotlight-sideman’s ax, a big upright bass. He’s a solid player who’s logged plenty of time with various stars, but that’s just one of the reasons he’s earned such high esteem, and there are few musicians in town who have a more wide-ranging group of friends. Back after a sold-out NYE show last year, his XXL Band draws on that group, featuring a dream team that includes some of the hottest pickers and singers in and around bluegrass: Michael Cleveland, Charlie Cushman, Jimmy Stewart, Billy Thomas, Dan Tyminski and Jeff White. These are guys who, through an indescribably tangled set of connections, have been playing and singing together for many years, and as they say, satisfaction is guaranteed.
