Peter Rowan w/The Black Lillies

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Peter Rowan holds impeccable bluegrass credentials — the singer, guitarist and mandolin player did a stint in the 1960s as a member of Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys. The Massachusetts native has done as much as anyone to keep bluegrass progressive, as his work with such groups as Seatrain and Muleskinner attests. His formidable chops and great taste in material make Rowan an all-purpose musician whose finger-picking technique coexists with a fine feel for blues, country and rockabilly, and his 2007 full-length collaboration with the equally gifted Tony Rice, Quartet, includes a superb version of Townes Van Zandt’s “To Live Is to Fly” along with fleet and subtly turned instrumentals.Joining Rowan on tonight’s bill is the Americana quintet The Black Lillies, who hail from Knoxville and specialize in intelligent, idiosyncratic rock-folk arrangements that employ the expert harmonies of Trisha Gene Brady and frontman Cruz Contreras.
