Matthew Joy was born in Boston Massachusetts. His family supported his interest in music and, on his thirteenth birthday, he received his first guitar. Settling on the instrument, Joy began composing almost immediately. During his high school years, under the tutelage of guitarist composer Sandy Prager, Matthew began studying the art of solo guitar playing and composition. Prager had introduced Matthew to the music of Ralph Towner and Egberto Gismonti. It was during this time that Joy began refining his compositional skills and finger-style technique on nylon and 12-string guitar.
In 1997 Joy enrolled in Berklee College of Music. He studied privately with renowned guitarists, Jon Damian and Mick Goodrick. He also majored in Jazz Composition studying with some of the greatest educators of the craft such as Ted Pease, Dick Lowell, and Scott Free.
After finishing his studies in 2002 Joy began vigorously composing and performing in Boston and New York. He later went on to form the group Orchestra of This, a contemporary acoustic jazz fusion group blending tribal beats and world rhythms. In addition he played lead guitar with the soulful singer Jesse Dee, with whom he recorded two studio albums. Having shared the stage with some of Boston's finest musicians as well as Los Lobos, Preston Reed, and Etta James, Matthew has also performed festivals and venues in the U.S., Canada, U.K, and Europe.
Matthew currently lives in Nashville TN where he received his Masters at Middle Tennessee State University in 2012 majoring in Jazz Studies. Joy's “Orchestra of This” continues to perform with in demand musicians such as percussionist Kyle Jones and Bassist Jon Cavendish. He also continues to freelance with many of Nashville's talented artists and maintains a hearty teaching schedule.
