If this were the Scene’s “You Are So Nashville If ...” issue, it’d be time for a Lindi Ortega entry. She’s got the sort of story new-to-town Americana musicians — who are starting to seem more common in these parts than aspiring-country-star transplants — practically salivate over. Drawn to the romantic notion of walking where the classic country legends walked, the Canadian singer-songwriter moved down here, picked up a sympathetic and savvy producer in Colin Linden, and landed song placements and a 5 Spot cameo — complete with a jealous name-check from Avery Barkley — in the prime-time soap portraying our fair city. And she certainly didn’t do it by sounding bland. On last year’s Cigarettes & Truckstops, Ortega translated her love of country’s mythic past into alluring, noirish music, using her crystalline soprano to more teasing, seductive effect than any singer this side of Nancy Sinatra.
