Ellis Paul w/Logan BrillPop/Rock
Guitar-toting troubadour Ellis Paul grew up in rural Maine, but in the 25 years since his emergence from the Boston folk scene his music has become increasingly urban, urbane and diverse. Last year he put out a Christmas disc and a collection of songs for kids about American heroes, including Chief Joseph, Ben Franklin and Nellie Bly. But Paul’s more of a Woody Guthrie man at heart, who set Guthrie’s unpublished lyrics for “God’s Promise” to music for his own Speed of Trees and was a linchpin of the “Ribbon of Highway, Endless Skyway” tribute tour. Nonetheless, the sound of Paul’s music for adults is crisp and contemporary, framing his keening tenor in a mellow-rock framework that reinforces the architecture of his bold melodies and harmonies, all in service of stories torn from the fabric of real life and told with the spare but telling details of a crafty journalist — with an added spike of humor onstage.
