Bobby Keys and the Suffering Bastards w/Natural Child

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

We couldn’t pick a better match for Bobby Keys — purveyor of wicked sax lines for The Rolling Stones and other icons of the ’60s and ’70s — than Natural Child, who have one of our favorite contemporary takes on that vintage style. Sure, Keys and his Suffering Bastards are likely to pull out favorites from the canon — like “Can You Hear Me Knockin’?” and “Whatever Gets You Through the Night” — but don’t be fooled: This is not your junior prom’s cover band. Since moving to Nashville in the ’90s, Keys has made friends and bandmates out of road-seasoned players who have the skill to carry off new interpretations of the classics. As reported in March by the Scene’s Adam Gold, the group has made more frequent live dates in conjunction with Keys’ 2012 autobiography, and will be tighter than ever. The same could be said of Natural Child, who spent most of 2012 on the road in support of two new full-length albums. Don’t snooze on this one — rarely do rock legends of Keys’ stature appear in venues as intimate as Mercy Lounge, and rarely does Natural Child appear anywhere before midnight.
