Get Behind the Mule: A Tom Waits Tribute to Benefit Second Harvest Food Bank

Tom Waits looms large in the pantheon of idiosyncratic auteurs in modern popular music, and the diverse array of styles he has absorbed over his 40-plus-year career makes him difficult to describe, let alone imitate. His records are as much theater as they are music, and he’s had a substantial side career as a film composer and actor. Every December since 2006, a rotating cast of a dozen of Nashville’s bravest bands and solo acts have gathered to pay tribute to Waits’ body of work, each offering their own interpretation of three of his songs. Proceeds from the door go to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and the promoters cite more than $4,000 donated in the event’s six-year history. This year’s roster includes veterans David Olney, Tommy Womack, Afton Wolfe, Joshua Black Wilkins, Ballhog! and Wess Floyd, as well as Jamison Sevits, Tony McLoughlin, Ryan B. Case, Jhesi Boyer, Caleb Owens and Brian Ritchey.
