Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Affable heart-on-his-sleeve Scottish rocker Scott Hutchison first used the moniker Frightened Rabbit for his initial solo efforts in 2003. His mother gave him the nickname during his timid youth, and it’s an apt description for his still-sensitive nature. In 2008, Frightened Rabbit — by then a four-piece — released their second album, The Midnight Organ Fight. Hutchison’s biting wit and brash lyrical heat are matched by fiery performances that upgrade the albums from ringing indie pop to bristling rock roar. Over-production and road weariness weigh down their 2010 follow-up The Winter of Mixed Drinks, but they return to form with last year’s Atlantic debut Pedestrian Verse. Still polished but not overwrought, the songs are leaner and rock harder with less extraneous frippery. With the Twilight Sad.
