The Vince Gill Bluegrass Band, as one might wishfully call tonight’s incarnation, surely serves several enjoyable purposes for Mr. Gill. For one thing, it hits a sweet spot between his job as a big country bandleader and his sideman gig with the Time Jumpers; here he’s more like a first among equals, still in charge but bearing down more on traditional material than tuning the ensemble to tackle a set full of his own songs. This time around, the lineup’s likely to include North Carolina banjo stalwart Jim Mills, along with the redoubtable Dennis Crouch on bass, ace fiddler Stuart Duncan and underappreciated guitarist and singing sidekick Jeff White. Will any of Gill’s many bluegrass pals turn up to help out? Quite possibly. But on the other hand, it really doesn’t matter; this is an outstanding lineup all on its own.
