Magnolia Sons w/Peter Terry and the City Profits & Star and MiceyPop/Rock
In search of the widest possible audience, some groups squeeze all the fun and character out of their music. Like a big, steaming bowl of unseasoned Cream of Wheat, they make me want to hide under the table — or at least throw some strawberry jam at them. For examples of work catering to broad tastes without turning into a blob of bland goo, the aforementioned mush-makers should check in at The 5 Spot tonight. First up is The Magnolia Sons, a coed group straight out of late-’60s pop radio, with a penchant for snappy dressing and a strong Motown flavor. Next are The City Profits, whose tight arrangements excel in showcasing frontman Peter Terry’s soulful Chicago-style croon. Topping the bill are Memphis natives Star & Micey, whose sunny, sing-along folk pop gives the Energizer bunny a run for his money. Spoons not included.
