Nashville Blues Society's Holiday Party feat. Charles Walker, Cumberland Blue

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Retro-slouching hipsters know vocal powerhouse Charles “Wigg” Walker as the frontman for Nashville’s own R&B roots earth-movers The Dynamites, but Walker was making records and R&B history before Santa got a brand-new bag, starting with 1959’s regional smash “No Fool No More” and ’63’s “Sweet Sweet Love” on Chess Records. Parallel to the ’Mites, Walker’s kept putting out sizzling blues albums — the latest is 2010’s Soul Stirring Thing — with his own band. Which makes the gravel-and-honey-voiced 72-year-old a perfect headliner for the Nashville Blues Society’s Holiday Party in the rooftop ballroom at the Maxwell House Hotel. Admission includes dinner and a year’s membership, and following Walker’s 70-minute set, a bonus performance by youth band Cumberland Blue and a grand finale bring-yer-ax jam session. 6 p.m. at the Maxwell House Hotel
