Described as "refreshing, alive, and filled with the joy of making music," the Blair Woodwind Quintet, founded in 1971, has an extensive repertoire and has performed throughout the South and Midwest, on radio and television, and released a critically acclaimed recording.
The ensemble is featured with pianist James Helton on the American Academy of Arts and Letters Composers Award Recording, Michael Kurek. A CD was released in August 2011 showcasing Peter Schickele's A Year in the Catskills, a quintet written for the Blair School's Commissioning Project, "Music for the 21st Century," and premiered in Ingram Hall in March 2009. Included on that album are several of Schickele's smaller woodwind works, performed by quintet members with the assistance of pianist Melissa Rose and cellist Felix Wang.
The Blair Woodwind Quintet has also premiered compositions by Tom Benjamin, John Elmquist, Eloy Fominaya, Irving Kane, Sterling Lanier, Joe Laird, John Marvin, Michael Alec Rose, Jonathan Saunders, Gay Spears, Dan Welcher, arrangers Jay Dawson and Eberhard Ramm, and Vanderbilt/Blair School of Music colleagues Michael Kurek and Michael Alec Rose.
