Melissa Rose, Associate Dean and Associate Professor of Piano, teaches courses in vocal/instrumental accompanying and chamber music. She has performed nationally and internationally as a collaborative pianist in chamber music and song recitals and as an official pianist for music competitions and conferences. She has also performed locally with the ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, Nashville Symphony, and Nashville Ballet. Since 1994 she has been the principal pianist with the Summerfest Chamber Music Series in Kansas City. Critics describe Rose as a “suave partner” who is “powerfully and intensely musical.”
Her publications include a score and recording of Tonadillas by Granados, published by ViolaSound, in addition to chamber music recordings on the Naxos, Centaur, Blue Griffin, and Arizona University labels.
Rose is also active as an adjudicator and workshop presenter, and is an executive board member for the Tennessee Music Teachers Association.
A native of western Pennsylvania, she received the master’s degree in solo piano performance from the Yale School of Music and a D.M.A. in piano chamber music and accompanying from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Martin Katz. Before joining the Vanderbilt faculty in 1996, she taught for eight years at Truman State University in Missouri.
