Nashville Jazz Orchestra PerformanceClassical
If you’re in hot water because you forgot to make Valentine’s Day reservations and all the good restaurants are booked, here’s the perfect out: Tell your significant other you want to celebrate early, with dinner and an evening of old-school love songs. In case the title “Hello Young Lovers” didn’t give it away, Nashville Jazz Orchestra’s winter concert features romantic gems, delivered by a couple of formidable big-band singers. Local jazz fans surely know Nashville institution Annie Sellick, a gifted chanteuse and frequent collaborator with NJO. But this is a Music City debut for Joe Gransden, a mainstay of Atlanta’s jazz scene. Gransden’s combination of hard-bop trumpet and suave jazz vocals have earned him comparisons to Chet Baker, and his singing and showmanship bear unmistakable echoes of Ol’ Blue Eyes too. Sellick has performed with Gransden’s big band a few times, so expect a few smoldering duets. Consider it a relationship test: If you can’t get laid after this show, it might be time to seriously consider moving on.
