Ghost Dance w/The Electric Dollhouse Groovebuggy, Fly Golden Eagle & more

Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Here’s a note to bands seeking coverage from their local alternative-weekly newspaper: If you want your show previewed in the local rag, book it sometime between Christmas and the second week of January. This time of year is notoriously slow when it comes to appealing rock ’n’ roll shows (New Year’s Eve notwithstanding, of course), so the moment we saw the Facebook event page for a Jan. 4 throwdown at local house-show spot/Jeffery Drag Records bastion Mt. Swag, we starred it on our calendar. (Important note: the show has now been relocated to The Groove.) Headed up by Bad Cop’s Adam Moult, Jeffery Drag issues releases from gritty, DIY garage, punk and rock ’n’ roll outfits — among them Springfield, Mo., group Ghost Dance and Shreveport, La.’s The Electric Dollhouse Groovebuggy, both of whom appear on tonight’s bill. Recorded in July ’11, Ghost Dance’s Live at Mt. Swag: Vol. 2 collection calls to mind the raw, primitive delivery of proto-punks MC5, while Groovebuggy’s tune “To Hell With the Ocean” suggests the redlining blues-punk influence of Nick Cave’s Grinderman. Also playing tonight are local psychedelic garage-soul fixtures Fly Golden Eagle, ’90s-conjuring bubble-grungers Fancytramp and Shreveport’s punky experimentalists Don’t Forget Your Dinosaur — the latter has the phrase “Hail Sagan” at the top of their Facebook page, so we’re kind of required to be instant fans.
