Vickie Vaughn Band

Bluegrass
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Among the most promising of the younger bluegrass acts around town, the Vickie Vaughn Band sports a traditional five-piece lineup with some endearingly nontraditional features — most notably, the leadership of the surprisingly big-voiced Ms. Vaughn. A western Kentucky native and Belmont graduate, Vaughn’s got an outgoing personality and a fistful of original material that springs from her sturdy bass playing and heads off in a variety of directions, while banjo man Justin Hiltner shows there’s more to an arch-top banjo than the Ralph Stanley sound. Mandolinist Casey Campbell has drawn growing attention for his deft mix of creativity with knowing nods to tradition. Rounding out the lineup are guitarist Zach White and fiddle gal Maggie Estes, who, like their colleagues, are sharp enough players to have plenty of other cool gigs keeping them busy. Still, they all seem focused on making this particular lineup work, and the concentration’s paying off.
