Thank The Luthier, Steelism has arrived. The brainchild of steel-player Spencer “The Brit” Cullum and guitarist Jeremy “Does He Have a Nickname?” Fetzer, Steelism is an exercise in lyricism without words, a masterful example of the emotion and excitement that the best players put into each and every note. Also, they do an absolutely incredible version of “Apache” — it lands somewhere between Davie Allan & the Arrows’ version and the Incredible Bongo Band’s — which for ax-worshipping nerds like us is pretty much like having Jesus riding shotgun and handing you beers.

The Steelism tapes may have just as well been unearthed at 926 East McLemore Avenue—a relic from a not-so-forgotten past. Songs like “Mint Julep” and “9 to 5 Jive” would have made Atlantic and Stax record execs giddy, circa 1962. But Steelism, for all its vintage chops, is happening now. It’s the project of Jeremy Fetzer and Spencer Cullum, Jr., guitarists who share a classical education in Steve Cropper licks, ELO synthesizers, and a dog-eared copy of Bill Keith and Winnie Winston’s seminal Pedal Steel Guitar book.

Fetzer, an Ohio-born guitarist with a natural affinity for the Telecaster, and Cullum, Jr., a pedal steel-playing Brit from Essex, east of London, channel the sounds and ambiance of rock and roll’s gold-plated past on their debut EP, The Intoxicating Sounds of Pedal Steel & Guitar. The duo met in Nashville and was soon together on a European tour backing Nashville’s Caitlin Rose. Their early songs create a musician’s roadmap: the languid “Sète, France” was penned on the Mediterranean coast, while “Lewis & Clark” can be traced to a Bozeman, Montana motel. The EP moves from a strolling Sunday afternoon soundtrack to raunchy surf rock and pedal steel-talkbox homage to Pete Drake. On “9 to 5 Jive,” you can almost see the hip shaking girls from Duane Eddy’s “Rebel Rouser” video. Intoxicating, indeed.

Artist Bio:

Nashville-based Poly is a trio of oft-sidemen, consisting of members Dan Sommers, Eleonore Denig, and Larissa Maestro, who began writing together in late fall of 2011. Very quickly, they established the following confines for their repertoire: the arrangements must be played by just the three of them on acoustic instruments only. No guitar allowed.

Somehow, they are making do with the very limited selection of three-part vocal harmonies, violin, cello, melodica, banduria, trumpet, trombone, mandocello, suitcase kick drum, kazoos, upright bass, toy piano, ukulele, glockenspiel, xylophone, bird calls, tiny bongos, sandpaper, stomp box, triangle, ratchet, hi hat, foot tambourine, and a host of other underestimated or little-known instruments.

In August of 2012, Poly released their first record to rave reviews- a pink vinyl 7” titled Three Songs by Poly. They are currently writing and recording for a full-length LP.

Artist Bio:

Chris Scruggs is a singer, songwriter, musician and recording artist from Nashville, Tennessee. Growing up in a musical family, the young Scruggs spent his childhood on tour buses and backstage at places like the Grand Ole Opry.

In 2002, at the age of 17 he joined the pioneering Americana band BR549 as a guitarist and lead singer, making a name for himself around the world. After leaving the group in 2005 to focus on his own career, he released his first official solo record "Anthem" in 2009.

With a new record finished and scheduled for a 2012 release, Chris is hitting the road (thanks to the good folks at Keith Case and Associates) and touring with his band, taking his all encompassing brand of "Tennessee Music" with him everywhere he goes.
