Corb Lund w/Denney and the JetsPop/Rock
In the tradition of fellow (mostly) Canadians like The Band, Corb Lund and His Hurtin’ Albertans prove that you don’t have to be born in the U.S. to have a deep appreciation for American music. Dating back to his first round in the industry as the long-locked bassman for post-grunge group The Smalls, Lund has been schooled in bending genres to the breaking point. While his latest solo album, Cabin Fever, is focused on O.G. country and rock ’n’ roll, Lund and his quartet traverse the genre’s fluid boundaries with ease and grace. He has the sophistication of the most serious songwriters, but with a freshness that can sometimes disappear once egos start inflating. Tunes like the wistful “(You Ain’t a Cowboy) If You Ain’t Been Bucked Off” owe more to classic country than to today’s crop of Music Row chart-toppers, and his collaboration with Hayes Carll, titled “Bible on the Dash,” boils with enough piss and vinegar to make even Johnny Cash grin. Lund’s pre-tour press releases indicate the band will make up the sets as they go along every night, choosing from a catalog that spans his seven-album career. There’s no telling just what ticket-holders might get.
