Only time will tell if young Nashville MC Brandon Brains will sustain a lengthy career in hip-hop, but he’s starting strong. Though his beats rely heavily on hooks from pop sources, his two mixtapes from last year, Ugly and Impatient and The End Is Weird, showcase a knack for flow. The 14 collaborations spread across his 25 tracks prove him a tenacious networker, and it will be little surprise if his socially conscious rhymes take off like a rocket once he teams up with the right producer. Brains will be joined tonight by Stillborn Identity, an MC from Pittsburgh who bears a strong influence from hardcore punk, and JE double F, a rapper from New Jersey whose penchant for detuned samples from horror flicks casts him as a junior member of Odd Future stranded on the East Coast.
