Pile, Fat History Month, Gnarwhal, Cy Barkley & The Way OutsidersPop/Rock
We could throw genre tags and RIYL references at tonight’s bands all day long and still not quite accurately describe what’s going on, but that gets us pretty psyched — it means tunes with a fresh approach are drawing us in with some familiar elements, a time-honored recipe for success. Pile and Fat History Month stop in on the return trek to their native Boston. Both start with fractured pop à la Pavement and Built to Spill; While Pile takes a turn for the heavy with some math-y, grungy post-rock, FHM adds a gritty rock edge to shambling, bombed-out folk textures reminiscent of Califone. On the local tip, Gnarwhal bring the larynx-shredding vocals and whirlwind blast-beats, and Cy Barkley and The Way Outsiders serve up Rough Trade and Stiff-school punk, fast and loud. Though they represent a strong contrast to the headliners, both locals tie in well by flexing a nuanced approach to incorporating pop melodies without watering down the buzz.
