Penicillin Baby, Rales, Sexx & Pocono

Pop/Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

Relative newcomers Penicillin Baby lean toward the “psych” end of their “garage-psych” tag: The tunes are drenched in echo, reverb and Indian-influenced lead guitar runs, but they stay compact, never drifting so far into space that you start to look at your watch. Ably recorded by singer/guitarist Jon Conant, the group has two EPs under their belt, as well as a split cassette with Megajoos, from which we picked the riffy nugget “Daddy Drove a Hearse” for our Best Local Rock of 2012 Winter Mix. This Baby has only been alive and kicking for 18 months or so, but already draws a big enough crowd to give a hand up to other, even younger locals: Sexx and Pocono will open the show, along with Rales, whose demo recorded at Screen Door graciously recalls your favorite Superchunk records.
