Blair Presents Eric Owens with Warren JonesClassical
The Metropolitan Opera’s most recent production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle received lukewarm reviews at best. Critics differed over the effectiveness of director Robert Lapage’s staging. Moreover, it was often noted that the 45-ton gizmo — nicknamed “The Machine” — that dominated the set didn’t always work properly. But critics were unanimous about one thing: Bass-baritone Eric Owens was the chief glory of the production. Owens sang the role of Alberich, the evil dwarf lord. New Yorker critic Alex Ross wrote that “Owens’ performance announces the emergence of a new major Wagner singer, for his portrayal is so richly layered that it may become a part of the history of opera.” Wow! Owens will appear in recital this weekend at Ingram Hall, performing with the redoubtable pianist Warren Jones. His program will feature the music of Wolf, Schumann, Schubert, Debussy, Ravel and of course, Wagner.
Show: 8:00 PM
Stage: Ingram Hall
Tickets will be available in the Blair School of Music office on January 23, 2013.
