Soul Clap Dance Off w/DJ Jonathan Toubin
In December 2011, traveling soul and rock ’n’ roll DJ Jonathan Toubin was in bed in his Portland, Ore., hotel room when a cab crashed through the wall and pinned him down, fracturing his skull base, pelvis, collarbones, ribs and sternum, and rendering him unconscious for a full month. Miraculously, Toubin managed to recover, even bringing his touring Soul Clap Dance-Off competition — which is more or less just what it sounds like — to The Stone Fox in October. The Ettes’ drummer, Poni Silver (also known to local fashion fans as the designer behind Black by Maria Silver), won the competition thanks to a whirlwind of fiery moves the likes of which are seldom seen here in Music City. This time, Silver will serve as a judge — as will Scene staffer Adam Gold, among others — and the stakes are a bit higher: This is the Dance-Off’s national championship tour, and in addition to a $100 cash prize, the first-place winner at each stop on Toubin’s tour will receive airfare and hotel accommodations for him- or herself and a guest to participate in the national championships at Brooklyn Bowl in January. Having served as a judge in the first round, I can tell you this: The Soul Clap Dance-Off is absolutely no joke. So if you think you can hang, strap on your dancing shoes and get ready to blast off — competition promises to be fierce.
