"The 1861 Project” is a collection of new, original songs inspired by the stories of the real people who fought and lived through the U.S. Civil War.
These songs were written by some of Nashville's most accomplished songwriters, each of whom brings their own unique perspective - and in some cases ancestral experience - to their understanding of the Civil War and what it means for us now, 150 years later.
The songs were written Nashville's finest songwriters, and recorded in a rootsy, acoustic style, resulting in a "musical historical novel" that suggests The Stanley Brothers and Alison Krauss meeting Steve Earle and Shelby Foote on the verandah at Tara.
This contemporary take on Civil War music, which will be released in July, 2011, features vocal and instrumental performances by an outstanding roster of performers that includes Nashville icons John Anderson and Marty Stuart.

Irene Kelley’s signature mix of Bluegrass, Country and Americana appeals to music lovers across all genres. A native of Latrobe, PA, Irene Kelley discovered her flair for songwriting as a teenager and soon found her way to Nashville, TN where her songs were quickly noticed and recorded by Carl Jackson, Ricky Skaggs and Sharon White. While recording an album for MCA and independently releasing two more records and touring worldwide, Irene raised two daughters and scored cuts with Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Loretta Lynn, Pat Green, Brother Phelps, Rhonda Vincent, Claire Lynch, Darrell Scott, The Whites, the Osborne Brothers and others. John Moloney was born in Waterford Ireland and was educated by the De Le Salle Brothers in Waterford City.
He trained and worked as a master glass blower in Waterford Ireland for eighteen years. In 1996, at age 34, after the sudden death of his first wife, Pauline, he left Ireland with his two small children and settled in the United States.
In the summer of 2011, John recorded his first album, GRACE, in Nashville, Tennessee. GRACE is a blend of traditional church hymns and old Irish ballads with a hint of bluegrass style to enhance the beauty of the songs.
John now resides in Pennsylvania with his wife, Carlene and three children, Neil, Orla and Clare, and Paddy the dog.
