This makes sense, as her upbringing creates just as much of a zig zag – she was born a Yankee, raised a southwesterner, reared an Austinite, schooled a Bostonian, and she’s spent most of the last decade in Nashville, TN. The influence of having lived and taken in all of these places have come together in song, and those are the songs to be found on Rachel Solomon’s debut album, Love Ourselves. With the help of producers Herb Shucher and Lance Dary, who have been backing up the legendary Randy Travis for nearly 20 years, it’s a little bit Beatles, a little bit Billy Joel (Rachel’s Berklee College of Music songwriting professor labeled her “The Female Billy Joel”), a little bit Carole King, a little bit Bonnie Raitt (Raitt’s guitarist George Marinelli played on the record), and of course – 100% Rachel Solomon.
With a mother who was a former dancer and father who was a former professional musician, there was no doubt that Rachel would be naturally attracted to the arts. There are pictures of a 5 year-old Rachel in Marlton, NJ, sitting next to her dad, Andy Solomon, on the piano bench in the late 1980's. His music career included playing keyboard in Ted Nugent’s early psychedelic endeavor The Amboy Dukes, as well as performances with Bob Seger, John Lee Hooker, and Tommy Cash, among others. “He taped the letters of the keys to each piano key, and would write out familiar movie themes so I could play them,” Rachel recalls about her first interactions with the piano. Like many a pianist does, she took classical piano lessons throughout her childhood. The peak of her classical music career was at age 17, when she won the opportunity to perform a Maurice Ravel concerto with the Austin Symphony Orchestra.
