Cold War Kids w/Houses

Pop/Rock
Nashville Scene Critic's Pick …

The bluesy and talented indie rock act Cold War Kids have one of the best gigs going — or one of the most frustrating. Debuting as the rock resurgence of the early Aughts began to wane, the California-reared quartet obtained notoriety in 2006 when sites like Stereogum and Gorilla vs. Bear propelled them from locally popular MySpace fodder to Hype Machine poster boys in a matter of months. But despite filling the occasional opening slot on high-profile tours and receiving consistent (if uninspired) press attention, the Kids have never quite broken through to the large-scale audiences these road warriors would surely like to seduce. Cold War Kids unwillingly waver between the underground and stardom, and although throngs of acts would love to occupy that kind of middle ground, they themselves are probably ready to cede. A bigger podium seems warranted for the band’s latest effort Dear Miss Lonelyhearts — a collection seething with crossover potential — but that’s sort of always been the case with these guys.
