She and Him w/The Secret Sisters
She & Him has been a careful, long-form exercise in nurturing a new brand for M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, and the match has been impressive so far. Ward flexes his considerable chops as guitarist and arranger without having to be frontman, and Deschanel shows off her nouveau-Nancy Sinatra skills, free of the shopworn expectations born from Summer Finn. Their newest effort, Volume 3, mostly stays the vintage pop course, but that’s not a complaint. She & Him execute the covers tastefully, with an acute awareness that bringing their own personalities to bear on chestnuts like “Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me” produces more interesting results than trying to best the original. The Deschanel-penned numbers continue to owe much to alumni of the Brill Building, but where she was doing well before, Deschanel is now mastering the genre: Standout examples like “Turn to White” convey complex emotional landscapes in a breezy, hummable package. The duo has a stellar band including Nashville’s own Chris Scruggs, but it’s too bad their Ryman visit is not one of the stops on the tour to feature Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell. Muscle Shoals’ old-school harmonizers The Secret Sisters, referred to by none other than T-Bone Burnett as being “as close to pure as it gets,” will make an excellent pairing nonetheless.
