Butch Walker feat. Nikki LanePop/Rock
This Is Spinal Tap effectively pegged musicians who try to capitalize on a new trend by squeezing themselves into an ill-fitting mold; the results of such pandering are often a laugh riot at best, a painful lesson at worst. But Butch Walker has actually succeeded at reinventing himself — multiple times. As a genuine hair farmer in SouthGang and Marvelous 3, he could have followed the well-worn path to obscurity and sporadic reunion tours, but opted instead to hone his chops as a songwriter and producer at the helm of some of the past decade’s best-selling albums. Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, P!nk and others may wax and wane with popular opinion, but they keep coming back to Walker because he knows how to write a great pop song, no matter what style it’s wearing. He’s applied those same skills to his own output, successfully exploring glam and soul, and finally settling with his latest group, The Black Widows. He’s a great match for Nikki Lane, who blends the grooviest country idioms with her own dark smoke and vitriol.
