Nashville singer songwriter and host of "The Short Sets" series at the Family Wash. A review from Tom Spaulding on MySpace paints the picture -- "It's always the quiet ones. Best to keep an eye on them when they move and an ear on them when they book a show featuring an all-star band.
Cole Slivka is an amazing singer/songwriter with an armful of catchy, moody, vibey songs that I have heard solo and as a duo but never with a band...until last night.
Her husband, the always-on-stage Paul Slivka played his usual combination of McCartney and Jack Bruce melodic and rockin' bass lines. Drummer Marco Giovini put his musical approach to playing drums...no monotonous beats, just superbly musical parts.
Famed angular guitarist Reeves Gabrels gave one of the finest guitar performances I have ever witnessed. Cole's songs seemed to be a perfect vehicle for his sonic sushi - raw, sweet, crunchy, smooth. Everything seemed to fit and everything was technically stunning.
He added choice gobs of dissonance to her songs and grooves that sounded perfectly logical and diatonic in his hands. Even a malfunctioning amp sounded musical when placed in the context of four musicians playing with sounds and dynamics.
This music needs to be recorded immediately. I won't soon forget what I saw and heard. I was sitting at a table with four very talented and experienced musicians - we were all at once inspired... and discouraged, in a good way.
Cole, you must do this again, soon. I'm gonna shout about the Quiet Ones until you do."
